How to Choose Binoculars

Tip! * The greater the magnification, the narrower the field-of-view.  If field-of-view is important to you, don’t purchase the most powerful binoculars you can find.

Binoculars or binocular telescopes, are really two identical symmetrical telescopes mounted together. Because they point in the same direction, they allow the viewer to see a far greater distance than with the naked eye. A binocular has a big advantage over single telescopes as you can see through both eyes and they are easier to hold steadily with two hands.

The Optics

The objective lens diameter generally determines how much light is allowed while the magnification will display the ratio of the focal lengths. An example is 8 X 35 (eight times magnification and 35 mm objective diameter) or 7 X 50 (seven times magnification and 50 mm objective diameter). In these two examples, the first one has a higher magnification ( 8 over 7) but allows less light (35 mm is smaller than 50 mm) than the second one. If you are requiring binoculars for low light use, buy the biggest objective diameter.

Lens Construction and Coatings

Unfortunately, in any optical instrument used for images (e.g. a telescope, camera, microscope, etc.) light is often reflected and distributed into the view. This can reduce contrast. Reflection can be reduced by adding coating to the optics. Some of the newest techniques are phase-corrected prism and dielectric prism coatings.

Tip! The first number refers to the magnification power of the binoculars, or in other words how many times the image is magnified. So if the number is 6, that means that the image that you view through the lens is magnified 6 times it’s normal siZe.

Binoculars designed from the Porro prism design are generally brighter than a roof prism design but newer technologies are reducing the differences (the Porro prism binoculars still have the highest value at a lower price).

Choosing binoculars

Roof-prism models are generally lighter and smaller than Porro models, but you will usually pay more. If the binoculars are sealed and filled with nitrogen gas, they will not cloud with condensation.

Tip! Many people don’t realize the advantages of owning a pair of quality binoculars.

Best Binoculars

Tip! Numbers are used to describe the telescopic strength of the binoculars. The first number gives the power of the magnification and the second number tells the diameter of the objective lens in millimeters which measures its light gathering strength.

There is no single criterion for determining the best binoculars. The binoculars which work for a birdwatcher won’t be good enough for a soldier. To choose the best binoculars there are certain basic principles which should be followed. They will help you in choosing the best binoculars for your needs.

The best binocular for you is that which fits in your hands well. It should provide you with a good field of vision. It should be able to withstand adverse weather conditions and allow you to see with clarity objects both near and far. They should be durable, and easy to carry.

Tip! Apart from magnifying images, binoculars offer other functions also. This can be confusing, as sellers often describe these functions by using lots of scientific jargon.

There are a number of prestigious companies, which manufacture binoculars for consumers. Their prices can vary according to the model. The models which provide greater fields of vision are generally more expensive than those providing lesser fields of vision. However, certain countries have started producing quality binoculars for merely one-eighth of the price charged by big names in the field. So if you are not brand-conscious you can save around six to seven hundred dollars on the purchase of high-quality binoculars. Those who are looking for the best binoculars might not be able to find them in department stores, as salespersons often do not know much about binoculars. Therefore, they are not in a position to suggest you the best model suitable for you. You might try out the stores that only sell binoculars and telescopes. If such stores are not available in your town or neighborhood, you can try an online store.

Tip! Apart from a large number of big companies, there are local manufacturers which produce night-vision binoculars at a much lower cost. But still, a good pair of night-vision binoculars will cost at least a thousand dollars.
